FAQ QUESTIONS: EMPLOYER MEDICARE RESOURCES

Short answers to common Medicare questions for Employees

 FAQ Questions

Short answers to common Medicare questions for people who are turning 65, still working, covered by an employer plan, or preparing to leave employer coverage.

Do I have to take Medicare at 65 if I’m still working?

Not always. If you or your spouse are still working and you have active employer group health coverage, you may be able to delay Medicare Part B without a late enrollment penalty. The right decision depends on employer size, whether the coverage is based on current employment, and how your plan coordinates with Medicare.

Can I keep my employer plan and enroll in Medicare?

Yes, in many cases you can have both Medicare and employer coverage. One plan will usually pay first and the other may pay second. For employees age 65 or older, employer size matters because Medicare coordination rules help determine whether Medicare or the employer plan pays first.

Does retiree insurance count as creditable coverage?

Retiree coverage may help with some medical or prescription costs, but it is not the same as active employer coverage based on current employment. Retiree coverage generally does not protect you the same way active employer coverage can when delaying Medicare Part B. Always confirm whether your prescription drug coverage is creditable for Medicare Part D.

What happens when my employer coverage ends?

When active employer coverage ends, you may qualify for a Medicare Special Enrollment Period. This can allow you to enroll in Medicare without a late enrollment penalty, but timing is important. It is best to review your Medicare options before your employer coverage ends to help avoid gaps in coverage.

Can my employer pay my Medicare premiums?

This can be complicated. Employers may have limited options for helping with Medicare-related costs, but premium reimbursement arrangements must follow federal rules. Employers should not simply pay or reimburse Medicare premiums without reviewing the compliance requirements that apply to their business.

Where can I get local help?

Employer Medicare Resources helps Nevada employers, HR departments, business owners, and employees understand how Medicare may coordinate with employer coverage. Local guidance can help you avoid missed enrollment deadlines, coverage gaps, and costly mistakes.
